It's been a long time....again What year...or two...it's been. I seem to have lost year or so on this...is it even a blog if it is only updated once a year? In any case, over the past couple of years, we have acquired and lost one dog and more recently acquired two more (who have remained with us). I have picked up some great music by a group called Proto-Kaw. They were originally called Kansas many years ago. They were the second to hold that name (Kerry call it Kansas II). When they originally disbanded, Kerry Livgren (one of their members) along with several others formed a band and called it Kansas (or Kansas III). This is the Kansas that most people know. Later, the Kansas II bandmates got together and, eventually, decided to get back together. Since, obviously, the Kansas name was taken, they decided on another name, Proto-Kaw. You can read more on their website, http://www.protokaw.com/.

Byrd Catcher Chases After The Wind You know, last night really stunk. Kentucky lost and is now out of the tournament. It was only the second round and Kentucky was the overall number one seed. And they lost. They lost to a number eight nobody. This number eight nobody wasn't a better team than Kentucky. They didn't have more talent. They didn't have a better record. They had no business beating Kentucky. But they did. Or, rather, Kentucky lost.
I was devastated by it. After the game last night, I had to go off and mull over it for quite a while. My wife, bless her heart, tried to console me. No effect. She tried to joke with me. Big time no effect. She eventually gave up. I got up this morning and everything stunk. My breakfast. My shower. My drive to work. My work. I didn't want to be around anyone and I sure as heck didn't want any U of L fans speaking through their smirks at me.
Then something changed.
First, I came up with an idea for my new desk sign (side note: I keep a sign up just outside my desk. I usually put some kind of mildly humorous phrase or quote on it. Last week, I had "If you can read this: Then you, too, realize that Florida A&M is in for a very, very bad week.". Well, today, I changed it to: "If you can read this: Then you, to, realize that it is Baseball season in Kentuckiana".
Shortly after this, I was asked to have a trainee sit with me. I also had to get some information and notes together for a meeting. And slowly, but methodically, life began to change my perception of last night.
But there was more than just a transformation. A small...epiphany came over me about the whole thing. It came through my own little sign. The words "Baseball season" grabbed me. Like Ecclesiastes 3 (or from the Byrds if you choose to ignore the Bible), I realized that everything has a season.
And for the Cats, it was over.
Everything goes through its season which leads to another season. When Winter is over, the seasons don't just stop. When Winter is over, Spring starts. When Spring ends, Summer starts and so on. The Cats lost and someone else will be crowned champion of college basketball. The Cats season is over.
So for me, it's Baseball season.

In a fog... I am in a fog (see subject). I have been slugging it out at work today. Apparently, I have done so at a good clip as I have gotten a lot of work done. Here's hoping that it was error free...
I find that my work situation today is representative of my personal situation over the last few days. From my epiphany of last week, I have hit some murky territory and I am hoping to find a way out. I am looking for the Lighthouse, but, as yet, haven't had success.
I fear the rocks are nearer than I think...

Saint! I was just doing a little lunch surfing and found an old friend. The band Saint is alive and well. Not only that, they have just released a brand new album. Methinks my well earned dollars are in danger again...
Here are the two sites I found for them:
http://saint777.net/saint_page.html
http://www.angelfire.com/indie/itb_saint/
What's even better is that they have their first four albums available for purchase (in CD format) for a very reasonable price. I think a little revision is in order. Methinks my well earned dollars are all but gone.
For those of you not familiar with Saint, they are one of the grand-pappies of Christian Metal. They were contemporaries of Stryper, but not so well known, nor well promoted. They have a sound that is somewhat akin to Judas Priest, but really forges it's own territory. Their music is very, very heavy. Stryper was the pop metal outfit. Saint was pure heavy metal. I can't wait to hear the new material.

Bambi, music and perspective... I have been reading again. This time it was a writing by Terry Scott Taylor (he of Daniel Amos, Swirling Eddies and Lost Dogs fame - see http://www.danielamos.com/ for more details). The article is something he wrote in 2001 for a magazine, I think. It talks about how different things (movies in this case) can affect each of us in different ways. It also talks about how the fact that a movie that promotes a Christian world view is not necessarily a great movie because of this message. As Terry puts it, "A Christian fish placed on a junk pile doesn't transform a garbage heap into a mountain of gold." It has reinforced something I have always said, but, at times, have had trouble dealing with. I have always divided things up neatly between "Christian" and "Secular". Be it music or literature or Church life, I have always had to classify things and people. The funny thing is that God doesn't. People are people. He loves them all. Some have chosen to come to Him, but He doesn't love them any more or less. He just approves of their choice. He is also not limited by our definitions of what is Christian when it comes to how He speaks to people. Actually, He is not limited by us in any way whatsoever. Who are we to define God? We are the creation, not the Creator. This little article stirred more than a philosophical/theological epiphany. It has given me a new outlook on how I might deal with things in life. I find myself looking at things a little bit differently. It's refreshing.
Here's the link to the article: http://www.danielamos.com/articles/bambi.html
It is well worth the read. Oh, and if you want to read more writings by TST, here is another link:

Scroll down to or do a search for "Articles by Terry Scott Taylor" (sans quotes). He is a good read.

Life is good... Well, the Cats have won and Duke has lost. Life is good in the Bluegrass. There's just always something special about those two events coming together. It's not quite as special as when they happen to be facing each other when it happens, but it'll do. It kind of reminds me of a day a few years back where a well thought of gentleman accepted defeat and a bunch of crooks seemed to win. After a couple of days, the final score came in and the well thought of gentleman was the winner and the bunch of crooks were in disarray. Life is good under the Son.

A Beginning... Well, I now have a web log. Now, what do I do with it? I expect I will jabber on about any number of things. A Beginning, however, is an important thing. Check out Genesis 1 if you doubt me. I recall a Chicago song about Beginnings. In fact, I believe that was the title of the song. Beginnings. I was present at the Beginning of my daughter. I remember it well. I had told my wife that she had to be done before the Miami Dolphins/Dallas Cowboys game. They are my favorite two teams and were going head to head as they do every three years or so. I was only kidding with her, but, like a trooper, she got the job done. The funny thing is, I don't even know who won that game. All I know is that this little bundle of pure joy was sucking on my finger like there was no tomorrow and that I was surrounded by smiling family and my beautiful bride. Now THAT was a Beginning.
